Mastering Culture Shock

It was an exciting and vibrant evening last at our Ludlow Toastmasters meeting on Monday.

We had an interesting and enlightening warm up session organised by Lindy:  “If you were to write a book, what would it be about.”   This was an interesting question as it gave you an on the spot insight on what really interests you or on what knowledge you have gained that you would like to share with other people.

We had an excellent speech given my Marina entitled “Mastering Culture Shock”.  Working from the Pathways programme, Marina was required to use some form of visual aids and chose to use a slide presentation using an overhead projector.   This is not always easy to carry out adeptly and seamlessly, however, Marina not only demonstrated slick and professional use of visual aids, she also presented a very interesting and informative talk.   We learnt what culture shock really means, the four stages of culture change:

  • The Honeymoon Period (when you are still in “tourist” mode)
  • Culture shock (frustration at not understanding gestures, language, customs etc)
  • Adjustment Stage:  Familiarity with locality, food, people
  • Acceptance Stage:  Making friends, accepting and being accepted within your new environment.

We were also introduced to the acronym VUCA:  Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguity

We were then entertained by our table topic sessions, which requires impromptu speaking for 1 – 2 minutes.   The first session was about modes of transport:   We had Lilly riding a Penny Farthing; Lindy travelling in gourmet bliss on the Orient Express;   Jayne taking a luxury holiday on the Queen Mary 2;  Hilary travelling to moon and back on a space rocket;  Kenny riding a turbo-charged donkey. Real flair and imagination demonstrated in such a short space of time.

We are hosting the second round of the Humorous Speeches and Table Topics Competition on Saturday, 28th September.  Jill will be pitching against 4 other regional speakers in the Humorous Speech section and Emily will be competing in the Table Topics section.

All are welcome to join and listen to some entertaining high-level speeches taking place at:The Ludlow Mascall Centre, Lower Galdeford, SY8 1RZ on Saturday, 28th September at 1.30pm.

Our next meeting Ludlow Toastmasters Meeting will take place at the Ludlow Mascall Centre on 14th October at 7.15pm.   If you would like to learn more about Ludlow Toastmasters, contact us at: https://www.ludlowspeakers.org.uk/contact-us/
